Purse
Made by Maggie Hayes Williams
c 1915
This beaded purse uses the frame and clasp from a commercial purse. A canvas beaded bag portion was made up to match the frame. A black cotton lining is hand sewn to the backing. The whirlwind symbol has long been an important symbol to native peoples in America and other parts of the world. It symbolized security, hope, and protection. It is only in recent times that, for many people, its meaning has changed.
