August 9, 1877
First Lieutenant Charles Woodruff of the Seventh Infantry sent a short note to his wife on August 9, 1877 during the Battle at Big Hole, quickly describing to her the events of that morning. A few days before the battle, Colonel John Gibbon had appointed him adjutant and accompanied Gibbon as his men assaulted the village on the morning of August 9. The Nez Perce repulsed the initial charge, forcing Gibbon to retreat. The Nez Perce encircled the remainder of Gibbon’s command, allowing their women, children, and elders to escape.
