Charles A. Woodruff Letter
August 1877
A few days after the battle of Big Hole, August 11, 1877, First Lieutenant Charles Woodruff wrote a letter to his wife Louise recounting the battle. He was shot in the left heel and in both legs but recovered and resumed his career with the US Army. Woodruff served in the Civil War. He subsequently entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1871. After recovering from his wounds at Big Hole, Woodruff continued his military career with postings at Forts Leavenworth and Vancouver, and served in the Philippine Islands before retiring. He died in San Francisco in 1920 at the age of 75.
