Over the years, a few members of other groups made coiled and imbricated baskets. An eighty-year-old Nez Perce woman told anthropologist Alice Fletcher in 1890 that the men wove cooking baskets out of split cedar roots “We put hot stones in them and boiled water, so cooked our food.” (Fletcher 1891, 6)
