Political Text Book for 1860

The 1860 Presidential election was one of the most contentious and confusing in history.  Four candidates battled it out on several platforms.  One of the candidates was Lincoln’s old friend and rival, Stephen Douglas.  With the other candidates, John Breckenridge and John Bell, Douglas split the Democratic vote, thereby ensuring the Republican Lincoln the victory.

In 1858, the debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas for a seat in the U.S. Senate were followed throughout the country and made Lincoln famous.
