Exterior of Lincoln Home from the southwest with a one-limbed tree in front.

The Lincolns planted an elm tree in front of their house in the late 1850s but by 1900, it had lost most of its limbs to disease.  All efforts were made to save it, resulting in an odd, 1-limbed tree in front of the house.
