George Loring Brown

Born in Boston, Brown spent much of his career in Europe, primarily in Italy. Italian scenes were a prominent theme in his works, although he painted many notable American landscapes as well. This painting may have been acquired by Longfellow on his last trip to Europe in 1868–1869.
