John Joseph Enneking
1877

Enneking served in the Union Army during Civil War, where he was severely wounded and held as a prisoner. After the war, he studied art in Europe, where he encountered the French Impressionists. He is credited with introducing Impressionism to American artists. Enneking and Longfellow may have crossed paths, as Enneking studied in Boston in 1868 and then settled his family there in 1876.
