This painting depicts Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain on the big island of Hawai'i. The beach in the foreground is Kuana'oa Bay, where the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel was built in the early 1960s. The hotel was one of Laurance Rockefeller's RockResort Developments. The hotel features the Lloyd Sexton Gallery, named for the artist, a well-known Hawaiian modernist painter.
