In 1938, Williams, his wife, Margaret Grosch Williams, and their son Frank began a trip from their home of Queens, New York through several national parks. Williams called these special places, "his cathedrals."

Williams drew great inspiration from Death Valley National Monument. In 1955, he and his wife returned to Death Valley, where they lived for three years in a Civilian Conservation Corps-built cabin at Wildrose.
