Dr. Hayden is depicted here with three men who served with the U.S. Geological Survey of the Yellowstone area in 1871. The Hayden expedition was the first extensive exploration trip into the Yellowstone area. Jackson and Hayden worked for the United States Geological Survey for the next seven years, exploring such places as Mesa Verde and Yosemite.
