Inspired by Charles Willson Peale's portrait of Washington at the battlefield of Yorktown, the general is depicted here within a battlefield landscape. Behind Washington stand the artist and his brother, Charles Willson Peale. All three are positioned in front of a large tree. A column of uniformed solidiers, with one carrying a French flag, is featured in the right midground.
