A Self-Portrait of Henry Mockel at Work

Henry Mockel
Before 1981

While Henry Mockel created line drawings and paintings of desert landscapes and historic structures, he is best known for botanical art. The artist spent hours in the field sketching and produced detailed studies of flowers. Mockel wrote that he never picked specimens in order to paint, stating “I can’t evince any enthusiasm over a cadaver.”
