President Truman became accustomed to frequent travel and moving between his residences.
Work began shortly after the inauguration to fix up the Trumans' home in Independence, since it was in need of repair and in the national spotlight. After receiving a fresh coat of white paint, it was referred to as the "Summer White House."

Truman took several working vacations in Key West, Florida during his presidency. Keeping things casual, he adopted a "uniform" for himself and his staff that included bold tropical sport shirts. The Truman administration traveled on the presidential airplane, the Independence and yacht, the USS Williamsburg. The plane and yacht had china, flatware, crystal and other official accessories especially designed for them.
