On February 17, 1924, Bess gave birth to Mary Margaret Truman at home. Margaret became the center of her parents' lives. Although the 1920s were an unstable time for Truman's career, the couple tried not to deny their only child any comforts.

Harry Truman's political career moved to the next level when he decided to run for US Senate. For the next decade, from 1935-1945, the Trumans lived in several apartments in Washington, DC. Bess maintained a close relationship with her mother. She invited her to stay with them for extended periods of time. Bess and Margaret also spent summers at their home in Independence to allow Margaret to attend school.
