Nuova Raccolta di Quiquanta Costumi
1816
Bartolomeo Pinelli
While in Rome in February 1834, Eliza Ridgely recorded in her account book the purchase of two interesting picture books, one a book of Roman architectural views, the other this volume entitled Nuova Raccolta di Quiquanta Costumi [New Tales of Fifty Picturesque Costumes]. It still bears Eliza’s inscription "Mrs. John Ridgely, Rome, March 17th, 1834" and her name on the custom-made cover. The book contains views of a wide variety Italian folk activities and customs, ranging from games (e.g., boccia ball) to religious celebrations to washing clothes.
