By the mid-19th century, Eliza Ridgely, inspired by gardens she saw during her trips abroad and in horticultural publications, had introduced fashionable marble urns to Hampton’s gardens. The “vases,” as the urns were then called, were considered “objects combining to give both a beautiful and classic appearance to situations where they may be introduced.”
