Candlestick
Manufactured at Arthurdale, WV
Mrs. Roosevelt kept this pewter candlestick on her bedroom mantel. It was made at Arthurdale, WV, a New Deal resettlement project begun in 1933 for poverty-stricken mining families, with ER’s personal support and involvement. A part of the plan was to provide the unemployed with the land and tools for subsistence farming supplemented by craft industries, such as pewter making, initiated by Nancy Cook. While the venture never flourished, Mrs. Roosevelt supported the community throughout the rest of her life.
