| Candlestick Manufactured at Arthurdale, WV Mrs. Roosevelt kept this pewter candlestick on her bedroom mantel. It was made at Arthurdale, WV, a New Deal resettlement project begun in 1933 for poverty-stricken mining families, with ER’s personal support and involvement. A part of the plan was to provide the unemployed with the land and tools for subsistence farming supplemented by craft industries, such as pewter making, initiated by Nancy Cook.
