Hat

As a younger man, Carl Sandburg's vision was impaired by a film covering his cornea. He had this removed and was forever grateful for the gift of sight. He was always protective of this gift, wearing hats and visors, or in this case a combination of each. The ability to see made Sandburg a true visionary, for he saw in humanity much of what was hidden and he shed light where it had been dark with his words. He was equally protective of this gift, fighting hard for the rights of Americans to speak out against wrongs even when it meant he was seen as a propagandist poet by his critics.
