This garret in the Sandburg's Michigan home is where Mr. Sandburg tackled the mammoth task of writing his Pulitzer Prize winning biography of Abraham Lincoln, The War Years. When asked about using crates for desks Sandburg remarked, "If General Grant could command his troops from an old crate, I can certainly write about it from one." Sandburg used these "old crates" in a number of ways often configuring them this way and that until he was satisfied.
