Mr. Custis was a sportsman. His two favorite sports were horse racing and hunting. He kept hounds for his hunts and frequently led parties into the Arlington forest for game. Trophy antlers were mounted and hung in the back hall - Hunting Hall - of Arlington House, where Custis had painted frescoes of hunting scenes. Many of those antlers were taken by Union soldiers as souvenirs during the Civil War. These antlers are original to Arlington House.
