Engraved on back "Uncle Robert 12 Oct. 1870." This locket contains a black and white photograph of Robert E. Lee on the left side and a grayish lock of hair on the right side. Locks of hair were precious mementos of loved ones throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. They were often taken at the time of one’s passing. The date of the inscription is significant as it was the date of Robert E. Lee’s death. Metal, glass, paper, hair. L 4.3, W 3.4 |
