SR410 and Area Trails Reopen While Winter Arrives in the Backcountry

The entire SR 410 corridor is now open after being closed due to fire activity outside the northeast boundary of the park. Associated trails are also open to normal use with the exception of the Pacific Crest Trail north of Chinook Pass. All evacuation orders affecting Mount Rainier National Park have been rescinded. Fire crews are completing operations along the highway outside of the park. Please drive cautiously as they will be monitoring areas along the SR 410 corridor.

Sunrise Road has re-opened after being closed by early season snow. Conditions permitting, the Sunrise Visitor Center is open 10:00 am – 6:00 pm through September 24th and the Sunrise Day Lodge is closed weekdays and open 11:00 am – 4:00 pm, September 23-24th. Both close for the season after business hours on September 24th. Sunrise Road is scheduled to remain open through October 23rd, conditions permitting.

Snow arrived early in the backcountry. Navigation and winter travel skills are essential for a safe backcountry trip. As of Tuesday, September 19th, there was seven inches of new snow at Summerland and a foot of snow at Panhandle Gap. Similar conditions exist above 4,500’ in elevation throughout the park.
