Big Joey: Hey how you doin’?
I’m big Joey and we’re here at Biscayne National Park
for Family Fun Fest once again
the Biscayne Wintergames.
I know a lot of you remember me
as the used bone salesman
but I have changed careers,
I am now with WBIS Sports
here at Biscayne National Park,
and we are heading out to the Wintergames.
Let’s head out to the Lionfish Queen and Dorothea Maynard
for our introductory comments.
Dorothea: Hi, and welcome to Biscayne National Park
and family Fun Fest’s first ever
Biscayne Wintergames Competition!
Big Joey: Hey! Thanks Lionfish Queen and Dorothea Maynard.
That was absolutely fabulous!
Now, let’s look at the torch run itself
with reporter Deborah Mitchell. Deborah?
Deborah: Have you ever had a dream?
Have you ever had a dream of being a torchbearer
at Biscayne Wintergames?
Well these kids that you see by me
have fulfilled their lifelong dreams.
They have worked hard
and met organisms along the way
who have helped them achieve their dreams,
organisms with names like firebush,
fireworm, fire coral, fire sponge
and the most difficult, the fire ant.
Their dreams have paid off
and now they join the ranks
of the exceptional participants
of the Biscayne Wintergames. Thank you!
Big Joey: And Thank YOU Deborah Mitchell!
Now we’ll head out to the biathlon venue with Ranger Maria.
Ranger Maria: What is the hardest event at Biscayne’s Wintergames?
You guessed it when you said Biscayne Biathlon.
Participants will don snowshoes in sunny 80 degree temperature,
use them to traverse the lush green grass here at the visitor center,
and will attempt to eradicate lionfish in the area.
Please be advised that this athletic event
is not for the faint of heart.
It requires special training and coordination
to keep a steady hand to remove the venomous fish.
Keep it here.
Please note that the lawn grass has been substituted
for seagrass in this event.
Big Joey: Wow! Thanks Ranger Maria!
Snowshoeing and shooting lionfish in one activity.
Amazing! The only thing that’s more bizarre than that is the sport of curling,
and for that we head out to
Mandy Hunnewell who’s gonna tell us all about that crazy sport: curling.
Mandy Hunnewell: Keep it here from the curling competition from the Wintergames!
Big Joey: That’s it? That’s all she’s got?
Alright. We’ll skip over that for an interview
with a skate with Nicole Hunnewell. Nicole?
Nicole Hunnewell: Thanks for joining us for another exciting one-on-one interview
with the athletes from Biscayne Wintergames.
Keep it here for exclusive interview with the skate,
who has only made one appearance here at Biscayne.
We will discuss how he feels about having his reclusive image
across the iconic “SeaWeedies” box.
Ummm. Where is he?
Has anyone seen the skate? Is he here?
No? Ummm.
Keep it here for your chance to see the skate.
Ummm. Has anyone seen him?
Hello?
Big Joey: One appearance on a “Wheaties” box…
a “SeaWeedies” box? Really?
One appearance and you get on a “SeaWeedies” box?
What’s this world coming to?
Alright. Every ceremony…every sport, rather,
ends with a medal ceremony.
My cousin Big Mike is gonna tell us all about ours. Big Mike?
Mike Hassall: I just heard of a new event
that’s taking place today for the first time at Family Fun Fest.
For the very first time,
Family Fun Fest participants and the general public
are being invited to come see our archaeology lab,
and this is a really cool thing because our archaeology lab treats metals,
and that’s the tie-in to the Olympic games.
Metals have to be very carefully preserved
once they are removed from the ocean environment
so that we can see those artifacts
and learn about the ships that carried them.
And that takes place right behind this door
in our archaeology lab and hopefully,
you’ll get to see it soon.
Big Joey: Hey, thanks Big Mike!
That was amazing!
And now, before we close the show,
we wanna make sure that you get to see some of the other events
that went on here at the Biscayne Wintergames.
I’m signing out for WBIS Sports,
I’m Big Joey…here you go.
[music]
Lionfish Queen: That is all from the Family Fun Fest
at Biscayne Wintergames at Biscayne National Park.
Goodbye!
