Yo me llamo Georgina Jacquez y yo nací en Las Cruces, Nuevo México. Recuerdo siendo una niña explorando el bosque mientras que los adultos pescaban o disfrutaban de tiempo - cocinando los peces que habían sacado mis tíos, mi papá, mi abuelo... Las mujeres -- todas ayudando en.. en preparar la comida y todos los primos jugando y conviviendo juntos. Esos son unos recuerdos muy bonitos que tengo yo. De compartiendo en esa felicidad con la familia estando en la naturaleza. Y yo recuerdo desde muy chica teniendo un interés muy fuerte en animales, insectos, plantas. Empecé a investigar y pues tomé esas encuestas que te dicen que carrera es una que es... (en ingles) What's the word I'm looking for? Una encuesta pues que te da sugerencias de qué carreras serían adecuadas para tus intereses pues. Y ahí fue donde yo realicé que habían biólogos que habían conservadores de la naturaleza y en ese momento me daban a mí un enfoque. Y trabajé como asistente de los biólogos en estos diferentes parques -- áreas naturales. Fish and Wildlife, National Forest Service. Y allí fue donde yo conocí a profesionales pero también pude empezar a tener ese reconocimiento de la profesión guardaparque o "park ranger." Ellos interactúan con el público con los visitantes y ellos tienen la oportunidad de compartir los recursos que están protegidos en los sitios en que trabajan -- o en donde trabajan -- y yo pensé que podría disfrutar o que sería agradable tener la oportunidad de trabajar en eso. La conservación para mí significa usando nuestros recursos en una manera responsable para que puedan estar disponibles para generaciones futuras. Agua limpia, áreas naturales donde se puede uno ir y relajar, y restaurar nuestra energía -- nuestras energías y poder no más ver cosas bonitas. Mariposas, pájaros, animales de diferentes clases. Yo quiero que cuando vengan mis hijos a visitar este parque o cualquier otro parque que ellas puedan tener esa experiencia y esa sensación de de.... (en ingles) Like amazement, I don't know how to say amazement... de ser - de ver algo maravilloso. Que ellas tengan la experiencia que yo tuve de niña en estos espacios naturales. No teníamos mucho. Así es de que yo -- desde muy chica -- aprendí apreciar las cosas como familia, el amor, amistades. Nunca nos faltó la comida. Teníamos un hogar. Aunque no teníamos mucho teníamos lo esencial. Y eso yo creo que me ayudó a mi disfrutar y agradecer lo que tenemos aunque sea poco. Nuestras vacaciones incluían visitas a áreas naturales y eso me enseñó a mí a ser ambiciosa, trabajadora, pero al mismo tiempo dar gracias y...y ser humilde en la vida que vivo hoy. Con determinación, trabajo y la pasión por algo que tú sientes muy fuerte si se puede. Para mí es un honor y yo me siento muy afortunada ser parte de una organización en cual yo siento que estoy contribuyendo a no sólo el reconocimiento de la historia ya sea natural o cultural pero yo estoy ayudando a personas a entender y establecer una relación con estos sitios. Y espero que ellos aprecien lo importante que es conservar y proteger estos sitios para generaciones futuras. Así es que para mí es muy grande honor ser parte de esto.
(ENGLISH TRANSLATION) My name is Georgina Jacquez and I was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I remember exploring the woods as a kid, while the adults fished or enjoyed time. Cooking the fish that my uncles, dad and grandpa had caught. The women all helped to prepare the food and all the cousins played and hung out together. These are some of my most cherished memories, of sharing this happiness with family while in nature. I remember as a kid having a strong interest in animals, insects, plants. I investigated and took a survey that tells you what career is one that is... (in English) What's the word I'm looking for? A survey that gives you career suggestions that would be adequate based on your interests. That is when I realized there were biologists and environmental conservation careers. In this moment I was given a path. I worked as a biological assistant in different parks -- natural areas. Fish and Wildlife, National Forest Service. And that is where I met professionals and was able to learn about the profession "park ranger." They interact with the public – visitors. And they have the opportunity to share the resources protected within the site where they work. I thought I might enjoy or that it would be fun to have the opportunity to work as a ranger. To me conservation means using our resources responsibly. So that they are available for future generations. Clean water, natural areas where you can go and relax, restore your energy, and just see pretty things. Butterflies, birds, different kinds of animals. I hope that when my kids visit this park or any other park that they can have this experience and feel the.... (in English) like, amazement, I don't know how to say amazement... (in Spanish) to be - to see something amazing. That they have the experience I had as a child in these natural spaces. We didn’t have much. And so from a very young age, I learned to appreciate things like family, love, friendship. We never went hungry. We had a home. Although we did not have much we had the essentials. This, I think, helped me enjoy and appreciate what you do have even if it’s a little. Our vacations included trips outdoors which taught me to dream, work hard, and at the same time give thanks and… be humble in the life I live. With determination, work, and the passion for something that you feel strongly about, it can be done. For me it is an honor and I feel very fortunate to be part of an organization in which I feel that I am contributing to not only acknowledging the history, whether it be natural or cultural, I am helping people to understand and establish a relationship with these sites. I hope that they value how important it is to conserve and protect these sites for future generations. And so for me it is a huge honor to be part of this.
