Manoominike-giizis

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

Description

This is the month of the "Ricing Moon" It was the manoomin (wild rice), “food that grows on water”, that brought ancient Ojibwe to the Chequamegon Bay region a long time ago. This food would end up being a primary staple of Ojibwe diet and still is today. Today, lakes across this area support the growth of wild rice which is knocked into canoes, dried in the sun, parched in a kettle over a fire, danced to remove the hulls, and winnowed on a windy day to make the finished product.
