When early Anglo traders first ventured across the Great Plains on the Santa Fe Trail, they found a vast ecosystem brimming with life. Billions of prairie dogs lived in tunnel networks several miles wide; tens of thousands of bison grazed in immense herds, and grizzly bears roamed the prairie looking for their next meal.
