Do you feel welcome in a wilderness?

Some wilderness values relate to how humans interact with the environment. Personal experiences and symbolic meanings of the places we protect are important parts of wilderness.

Successful wilderness stewardship means that individual, cultural, and community connections to wilderness are recognized and protected. Today, Glacier National Park is working to make wilderness a place of inclusion.

Description

2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the Wilderness Act of 1964. Ten years after the act was passed, 92% of Glacier was proposed to be formally designated wilderness. On June 13, 1974, Glacier's wilderness recommendation was submitted to Congress -- but it was never enacted. While Congress determines the status of the proposal, Glacier manages its recommended wilderness according to NPS Policy.
