2019 Isle Royale National Park Artist-in-Residence Alex Braidwood presents naturesounds recorded on Isle Royale. Factors used for the sonification composition include the wolves and moose population counts along with other integral information such as kill rate, predation rate, and the annual formation of ice bridges – or lack thereof. The final composition is an investigation of a specific place through the seen, the heard, and the observed over time.

ʻŌhiʻa lehua is a native tree known for its vibrant red, yellow, or orange brush-like flowers. It plays a vital role in ecosystems, often being one of the first tree to colonize new lava flows. The tree holds deep cultural significance in Hawaiian stories and practices. Sadly, it is threatened by a fungus known as Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death, which has devastated populations across the islands.

Mott Island, Isle Royale National Park's summer headquarters, is the nucleus of operations on the island. It is a barrier island located on the south side of Rock Harbor Channel. The webcam is active on real-time intervals during the summer months when power is available to it, and communicating multiple times per day during the winter when solar power allows.

From the Ray Miller Trailhead it is a moderate climb through a desert-like plant community called Coastal Sage Scrub. Ironically, this harsh environment borders this seemingly endless body of water whose horizon is only interrupted by the Channel Islands.
