In April 1869 Chinese laborers employed by the Central Pacific Railroad toiled on this stretch of railroad grade. Their hardest labors already lay as monuments behind them - in the crossing of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California and the deserts of Nevada. These men welcomed the gentle, easy approaches to Promontory, from here only seven track miles away.

Since you and General Butler have agreed on the size, shape and location of the monument to Mr. Lincoln in his immortal address, we have started the process to have it made with the goal of November 19, 1975 for the dedication. Enclosed is a very poor copy of the sketches depicted of the monument for your file. When the drawings are completed, we will send you a better copy. The Sierra Nevada Adaptive Management Project seeks to determine the range of Pacific fishers in the Sierra National Forest. To attract and record fishers, scientists placed bait in front of remotely-triggered cameras set to flash at one-second intervals.
