To: John Heiser From: Karlton Smith Subject: Pleasonton & PA Memorial 04/15/2007 John: I was doing some research on Alfred Pleasonton to try to determine why he is on the PA Memorial. There seems to be no rhyme or reason since he was born in DC, never, apparently, lived in PA and seems to have no connection to PA, except, perhaps, being a mason with Franklin Lodge, #134, in Philadelphia. I discovered that his father, Stephen Pleasonton (1783-1855), was born in Delaware and as a clerk in the State Department is given credit for saving the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution when the U.S. and as such from 1820 to 1852 was reasonable for the nation’s light houses. Alfred also had a much older brother, Augustus James Pleasonton (1808 – 1894). He graduated from West Point in 1825 (when Alfred was two years old). Augustus resigned from the Army in 1830 and became a lawyer in Philadelphia. He also served with the PA militia and was appointed a brigadier general of PA militia on May 16, 1861. He was responsible for the defense of Philadelphia. A Wikipedia.org entry for Alfred Pleasonton claims that the Pleasonton on the PA Memorial is actually Augustus James Pleasonton and not Alfred Pleasonton. However, no source for this claim is cited. Have you ever heard of this possibility? Thanks, Karlton Postscript: No evidence that this statue is other than Alfred Pleasanton a this time. _J.H. 4/18/07
