Pelagia Melgenak

To learn the story of Pelagia (also spelled Palakia) Melgenak is to learn the sanctity of shared traditions, the loving bonds of kinship and the reverence of a spiritual connection to the land around you. Born in the late 1870s in the remote village of Savonoski in Alaska, Pelagia grew up learning about hunting, gathering, navigating and guiding in the area. That all changed in 1912 with the hot ash falling like a blanket covering the region with the eruption of Novarupta.

Dune Climb

It's the most famous attraction at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and a Midwest rite of summer, loads of fun for the young and young at heart: a 284-foot-high wall of glistening white sand that tourists climb for fun-the Dune Climb. Climbing this dune takes at least 10 minutes and is a strenuous hike that will fill your shoes and pockets with sand, and take your breath away. If you get to the top of the first dune you will have a good view of Little Glen Lake.

Wahweap Overlook

A short journey from the Carl Hayden Visitor Center, you will find the Wahweap Overlook. This high point offers a 360-degree panorama of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. It is a “must see” at anytime of day, however, sunrise and sunset adds a fusion of brilliant color to this awe-inspiring scene. There is a shade shelter and a bench for your viewing comfort. The overlook is open from sunrise to sunset.
Learning from Fire at Lassen

Wildfires have been burning more land, more frequently, and at higher severity levels since the mid-1980s in the western US. Some forested areas may convert to non-forest as a result. Though patchy openings in forests are ecologically valuable, extensive loss of forest means an overall loss of habitat for forest dwelling wildlife and other consequences. Below the north rim of the volcanic caldera and about 12 miles from the Entrance Station, San Antonio Creek meanders through the lush mountain meadows of Valle San Antonio and is home to thousands of non-native brown trout. Elk, bear, coyote, and mountain bluebirds are often spotted along the banks of the creek.
