Mrs. Recy Taylor was just 24 years old when she was brutally raped by six white men in Alabama. Upholding the Black woman's tradition of testimony and protest, Taylor actively participated in the pursuit to bring her attackers to justice. Though the men were acquitted in two separate trials, Taylor's courage speaks to the resolve of Black women to channel their pain and anger into political anger. We honor Taylor as an ancestor for teaching us a lesson on courage.

Paying wages to the formerly enslaved people served two purposes for the government officials developing the Port Royal Experiment. It helped to provide a solution of where people should live. Wages also began to put cash into the hands of people who had toiled this land for generations. Many sought to use that cash to secure that land for themselves.

Alfred R. Waud was an accomplished artist during the Civil War and in the post-war years. Waud served as an artist correspondent, first for the "New York Illustrated News" and later for "Harper's Weekly," following largely the Army of the Potomac. His sketches are some of the best examples of battlefield documentation of the American Civil War.

1979 Rally for the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights

At the end of the National March for Lesbian and Gay Rights, participants gathered near the base of the Washington Monument to listen to speakers proudly claim their queerness and paint a vision of a more inclusive future. One of these speakers was Charles Law, a Black gay activist based in Houston. He argued that the marchers must not fight for assimilate but integration so that all gay and lesbian people may one day enjoy the full benefits of their civil rights.

This bus stop is located near the entrance to the Mather Campground registration "kiosk" building and Camper Services, a pay laundromat and showers. There are more than 300 campsites scattered throughout a ponderosa pine forest, as well as restrooms and water. There are no RV hook-ups. In 1918, the United States Army learned that the Presidio of San Francisco was home to men who desired other men. The Men of Baker Street were incarcerated on Alcatraz Island for five months awaiting their courts-martial. These courts-martial found all six soldiers guilty and dishonorably discharged. They forfeited all pay, and five were sentenced to be “confined at hard labor” for sentences ranging from 2-10 years.
