Pelagia Melgenak

To learn the story of Pelagia (also spelled Palakia) Melgenak is to learn the sanctity of shared traditions, the loving bonds of kinship and the reverence of a spiritual connection to the land around you. Born in the late 1870s in the remote village of Savonoski in Alaska, Pelagia grew up learning about hunting, gathering, navigating and guiding in the area. That all changed in 1912 with the hot ash falling like a blanket covering the region with the eruption of Novarupta.

A recent study assessed the park’s Guam tree snail population, providing essential data to inform conservation efforts aimed at restoring the island’s fragile ecosystem.

St. Francois County Jail Museum

The St. Francois County Jail Museum is located in Historic Downtown Farmington, Missouri, along the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. It was constructed in 1870 and used as a jail until the early 1990's. For the first time at Big Cypress National Preserve, researchers used tree rings (growth rings) to study tree ages and which environmental/climate factors influence tree growth. One finding was that standing water levels—in this landscape shaped by water—are key. Researchers were also reminded that “you can’t always judge a book by its cover,” as some of the smallest trees measured were also the oldest.
