Navajo Bridge

A historic steel-arch bridge and new counterpart spans the Colorado River side-by-side in northern Arizona. On US Highway 89A in Marble Canyon, AZ approx 45 miles north of Highway 89 turnoff. As you approach the driving bridge, slow down to 25mph. You can pull over on either side of the spans. The Navajo Nation side offers arts and jewelry stands. The Glen Canyon NRA side has a visitor center built out of a 1930s rest area. Park, shop, walk, read about the site, view condors.

JULY 2023 – Saani Borge, a Mosaics in Science intern at San Juan Island National Historical Park, is responsible for a new generation of Very Hungry Caterpillars. Island marble caterpillars, to be precise—an endangered species found only on San Juan Island. As they mature and transform from tiny orange eggs to voracious larvae, scientists working with the captive rearing program coax them gently toward adulthood, and a brighter future for their species.

The highest point on the rim of Grand Canyon at 8,803 feet (2,683 m), Point Imperial is also the most northern boundary of the park. From here, visitors have views of the Painted Desert and the eastern end of Grand Canyon. It is from this area that the canyon transforms from the narrow walls of Marble Canyon, visible only as a winding gash, to a more open and dramatic "grand" canyon. Sarah Rittenhouse Armillary Sphere

The memorial to Sarah Louise Rittenhouse (1845-1943) is an armillary sphere on a marble pedestal. She is considered the founder of Montrose Park in Georgetown and is given credit for saving the park area from a housing development planned in the early 1900's. Platte Plains Trail - Bass Lake Loop Trailhead

Platte Plains, the park's most expansive trail system, spans nearly 15 miles total through low dunes with three main loops to explore and a walk-in campground. It's a perfect place to spend the day: pack a picnic, bring your canoe and fishing poles, tie up your hiking shoes, and enjoy the outdoors with family. The trail is surrounded primarily by pine-oak-aspen woods; open fields and lakes are scattered throughout plains. Pets are NOT allowed on trail from Dec 1 to Mar 31.
Yakutat

Accessible only by plane or boat, this area encompasses the park's coastal region, with 155 miles of little-known coastline. Here, huge mountains, enormous glaciers, and temperate rainforest meet the ocean. San Juan Island National Historical Park is home to the only remaining population of the federally endangered island marble butterfly (Euchloe ausonides insulanus). This pollinator is one of the rarest butterflies in North America, and appears fuzzy with marbled green, yellow, white, and black wings that have a span smaller than 2 inches.

Lehman Caves Geology Reveals New Discoveries

To this day, park literature and interpretive material consistently claim that the cave and the hillside containing it is a simple block of steeply dipping beds of Pole Canyon Limestone (NPS, 2015). So, one of the most surprising revelations when I started studying the geology of Lehman Caves was the realization that the cave formed entirely in high-grade marble, not limestone.
