Successful management of wildland fire is a team effort. National Park Service (NPS) staff in Alaska have formed a unique partnership with the Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service (AFS), which has helped to turn challenges into opportunities, and increased operational efficiency in utilization of helicopters for fire suppression. This partnership has benefited not only Alaska, but also the wildland firefighting effort in several western states.

Born to sharecroppers in the Mississippi Delta, Blackwell rose from humble beginnings to become one of many unsung Black female heroines of the modern Civil Rights Movement. Blackwell was an outspoken critic of racial and economic inequality and the first Black female mayor elected in the state of Mississippi. We honor her as an ancestor for reminding us of the power to change the circumstances we were born into.

Located at Market Plaza, the South Rim's business center, the main lodge has a cafeteria style restaurant, coffee shop/cafe, gift shop and an outdoor patio tavern with a food menu. Pet friendly rooms are available. it's a short walk across the parking lot to Canyon Village Market (General Store and Deli), and the U.S. Post Office. From the lodge, it averages around a one mile (1.6 km) walk, along paved footpaths, to the edge of Grand Canyon.
