Robert Rayford’s life is mysterious; there are few records of his family, his personal interests, or even the location of his grave. Unfortunately, Rayford’s life and death have slipped into obscurity. Nonetheless, he remains an important figure in medical and social history as the first HIV/AIDS patient in the United States.

Rebecca Winters was emigrating to Utah with her family in 1852 when she contracted Cholera and died within sight of Scotts Bluff. Her grave site was marked with a metal wagon wheel rim that was engraved “Rebecca Winters, Age 50.”

This grave marks the final resting place of one of over 100 United States soldiers who died at Chatham in the aftermath of the Battle of Fredericksburg. The majority of the soldiers buried on the property were reinterred at the Fredericksburg National Cemetery. Today, three graves remain at Chatham.

Here, Cesar Chavez was laid to rest in 1993. Upon her passing in 2016, Cesar's wife Helen was interred by his side. Cesar wished to be buried on the grounds where he pursued his labors as an activist during his last quarter century. After his passing, Helen Chavez made it clear she did not want him to ever be left alone.
