Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox,” challenged British rule in the South Carolina backcountry after the Continental Army’s defeat at Camden in August 1780. His militia used guerrilla warfare to frustrate British efforts to mobilize loyalists in the Georgetown District. Southwind Nature Trail

Southwind Nature Trail is open 24 hours every day. It starts from four locations on Spring Hill Ranch. Visitors can loop around and see the Lower Fox Creek School from a distance. Two overlooks highlight the 1.9 miles (3.1 km) dog-friendly trail through prairie and lightly wooded areas. The hike is along a mainly gravel path with some steps and uneven surfaces. For visitors wanting an easy prairie experience, this is the most popular trail.

Loon Lake is a big, sandy-bottom lake with an accessible canoe/kayak launch system where boaters can board, launch and disembark from a watercraft safely and easily. There is no beach but you can wade out near the boat ramp. The lake bottom is firm and sandy. From the shore or dock, you can watch a parade of canoes, kayaks, and tubes crossing the northern tip of the lake as they float down the Platte River. You may also spy a muskrat, otter, or a fox!
