In early October, biologists with the San Francisco Bay Area Network Coho & Steelhead Monitoring Program assisted the California Department of Fish & Wildlife in collecting 40 juvenile coho salmon from Olema Creek. Now, these fish are living in the Don Clausen Fish Hatchery located at Lake Sonoma in Sonoma County.

To learn the story of Pelagia (also spelled Palakia) Melgenak is to learn the sanctity of shared traditions, the loving bonds of kinship and the reverence of a spiritual connection to the land around you. Born in the late 1870s in the remote village of Savonoski in Alaska, Pelagia grew up learning about hunting, gathering, navigating and guiding in the area. That all changed in 1912 with the hot ash falling like a blanket covering the region with the eruption of Novarupta.

Banastre Tarleton, a British army officer, famously commanded the British Legion, a provincial regiment composed of loyalist infantry and dragoons, in the southern theater under Lord Cornwallis during the Revolution. Feared for his ruthlessness by the patriots, his early successes in the field earned him notoriety. Defeated at the Battle of Cowpens by Brig. Gen. Daniel Morgan, Tarleton's favor with Cornwallis declined. Tarleton was present at the surrender at Yorktown.

The wilderness of Everglades National Park is very different from other places you may have boated, paddled, or camped. It can be confusing and difficult to navigate as the mazes of mangrove–lined creeks and bays all begin to look the same. With proper planning, you can avoid the frustration and hours wasted from getting lost. The 99-mile Wilderness Waterway attracts interest because it connects Flamingo and Ev-erglades City. Most paddlers allow at least eight days to complet
