Charles Wort's Boathouse

Constructed in 1932 by the National Park Service, the Charles Wort Boathouse was used for winter storage of boats by Jenny Lake boat concessioners. Boat concession operations have existed at Jenny Lake since the 1920’s. This building is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Here at Fletchers Cove, you can picnic, fish, boat, and ride your bike. You can also visit the Fletcher's Boathouse concession stand or just sit and enjoy the scenery. You can also purchase your DC fishing license. This is a popular stop for hikers and bikers on the C&O Canal, or on the Capital Crescent Trail.

This campsite is an open shelly sand beach stretching for several miles along the Gulf of Mexico. Expect expansive sea views as well as magnificent sunsets and sunrises. Ruins of a dock used by an old concession tour may be found here. In the 1830s, Fort Poinsett was located here. Its mission was to thwart suspected arms trading between Indians and Spanish fisherman. Mosquitoes and sandflies may be a problem year round.

Carrie Chapman Catt (1859 -1947) began her career as a national women’s rights activist when she addressed the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1890 at their national convention in Washington DC. She quickly became a dedicated writer, lecturer, and recruiter for the suffrage movement. She also worked for peace and was a co-founder of the League of Women Voters.

The Nelson-Reed property in Porter County, Indiana, is a historical site rooted in the Swedish immigrant farming community and Indiana Dunes preservation. Established by Swedish immigrants Charles and Mathilda Nelson, the farm became a hub of local history, with their son Bill co-founding the Duneland Historical Society. In 1952, Chicago architect Earl Reed Jr. purchased the property, championing conservation efforts, including the creation of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

The White Sands Historic District preserves structures and landscape features that are associated with both Pueblo Revival architecture and New Deal public works programs. These include a museum/administration building, a concession area and comfort station, and four residential buildings that house NPS staff. Native plantings and designed landscape features surround these structures, connecting the buildings to the surrounding natural environment.
