Mead Museum

The Mead Cultural Education Center, located in Yankton, South Dakota, was constructed in 1909 by Dr. Leonard C. Mead. Originally serving as part of the women’s ward for the Dakota Hospital for the Insane, the building was in use until the 1980s. Today, however, it houses the Dakota Territorial Museum and is upkept by the Yankton County Historical Society.

Through the AiR program, selected artists will immerse themselves in the park’s natural and cultural landscapes to create original artistic works inspired by the setting. “Can This Flesh Belong to Any Man...?”: George and Rebecca Latimer’s Flight to Freedom

In 1842, freedom seekers George and Rebecca Latimer arrived in Boston after escaping slavery in Virginia. Though Bostonians quickly secured George’s freedom, the Latimer case provided antislavery activists the political capital to usher in a statewide Personal Liberty Law, known as the "Latimer Law." Though largely remembered for the law that bears their name, the Latimers’ story also provides a powerful lesson of family resilience, community protest, and social change.

First Baptist Church

The First Baptist Church was the first church in Nicodemus, organized in 1878 by Reverend Silas Lee. The congregation met in private residences, a sod church, and a smaller limestone church until this building was built in 1907. The First Baptist Church served not only as a religious meeting place, but also a community building. The congregation built a new church north of this building in 1975 and are still active in Nicodemus.

Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller Mansion

Originally built in 1805 by Charles Marsh Sr., father of George Perkins Marsh, the federal-style brick house was sold to Frederick Billings in 1869. Billings renovated the home into a Queen Anne style mansion. In 1954, Billings' granddaughter, Mary French Rockefeller, inherited the home and estate with her husband, Laurance Rockefeller. In 1992, the couple donated the property to the National Park Service. Interior tours are available May-October.

Boston Store Trailhead

The Village of Boston grew up alongside a canal on the east side of the Cuyahoga River and a railroad on the west side of the river. Boston Store Trailhead provides limited mobility parking on the east side. Use it to access the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and refreshments at Boston Store. This small trailhead does not accommodate over-sized vehicles.

Bright Angel Trailhead

Bright Angel Trailhead is located just west of Bright Angel Lodge, Lookout Studio, and Kolb Studio. At 6,840 feet (2,085 m), it provides access for hikers and mules to many inner canyon destinations. From the Hermit Road Interchange shuttle bus stops, it is a short walk to the east, and up a hill, on a paved footpath to the trailhead. This winter, a number of trail closures (on parts of Bright Angel Trail) are in effect. Click on the link for details.

The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa was the site of the last concert performed by Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "the Big Bopper" Richardson hours before a tragic plane accident claimed their lives in February 1959. The performance at the Surf Ballroom has entered American cultural memory and played a major role on the early development of rock 'n' roll music.
