Parklands of Golden Gate National Recreation Area incorporate San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties. All of which, envelope overlapping military histories, and social movements that influenced each other. This included military bases and the Presidio’s Letterman Army Hospital. LGB military personnel faced the military ban, discrimination and in 1981: the HIV/AIDs epidemic.

The Nike Missile Site SF-88, is a Cold War era military site In the Marin Headlands. During the Cold War, there were close to 300 of these sites around the U.S. armed with powerful missiles. The fear of the enemy, the fear of the ‘other’ that powered this missile defense system, is the same sentiment that fueled the military ban on LGB people.

Original McKinley Park Headquarters

The park’s first ranger, Harry Karstens, arrived in 1921. After a summer of meeting people, and a long patrol through the park, Karstens began clearing land for his headquarters on the northwest bank of Riley Creek. The location offered an ideal place to monitor people using the trail leading west to the park, but proved to be incredibly cold in winter—which led to its move in 1925, to a hillside offering much milder winter temps!

Absalom Jones, founder and pastor of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, preached "A Thanksgiving Sermon" on January 1, 1808 in recognition of the "Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves." In his sermon, the Reverend Jones proposed that January 1—the first day of the ban on the importation of slaves into the United States— be observed each year as a day of public thanksgiving.

The Racial Integrity Act of 1924 banned interracial marriage in Virginia. It also required Virginians to register their race as either "white" or "colored." One of the many consequences of this discriminatory policy was the erasure of the Indigenous identity from public records. To this day, Indigenous people in Virginia have difficulty tracing their lineage due to this century-old policy.

Designed to house Mechanics Bank and Merchants Bank, it served both craftsmen and business owners during the city’s whaling boom. Located on North Water Street, it symbolizes New Bedford’s 19th-century economic heritage and is now part of the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.
