One of the oldest public parks in Washington, D.C, the land was designated as a public park on the original 1791 L'Enfant plan for the city. During the Civil War, a temporary hospital, known as "Lincoln Hospital" was constructed on the site for wounded Union soldiers. Following the war, the army removed the hospital and Congress appropriated funds to improve the park with flowers, trees and pathways. Then as now, it remains one of the most popular city parks on Capitol Hill

By the mid-1880s, Shaw was establishing herself as an advocate for temperance, a cause she took in part because of her time doing medical work in Boston. She first worked as a paid lecturer with the Massachusetts Women Suffrage Association, a position she secured through her connections with the prominent suffragist Lucy Stone. Moving up the ranks, Shaw was subsequently hired to work with the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, or WCTU, a national organization.

The sights and sounds of rural Appalachia fill the air at Mabry Mill during summer and fall. Watch the picturesque mill's slowly turning wooden wheel as water splashes over it, down into the mill pond. Listen for the ringing of a hammer on an anvil to guide you to the smith at work in the blacksmith's shed. On Sundays, bring a lawn chair and sit a spell to tap your toes to traditional mountain music.
Francis Marion

Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox,” challenged British rule in the South Carolina backcountry after the Continental Army’s defeat at Camden in August 1780. His militia used guerrilla warfare to frustrate British efforts to mobilize loyalists in the Georgetown District. Marion, formerly a Continental Army officer, coordinated effectively in the field with the Continental Army.
