Join Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area in celebrating our very important volunteer, VIP Bob Stoltz! Bob recently received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for completing over 2000 volunteer service hours. During his 19 years of service, Bob has also volunteered at Yellowstone National Park and Saguaro National Park. He plans to continue to volunteer at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area for his 20th year in 2025.

From November 11 to November 15, 29 Community Volunteer Ambassadors (CVAs) participated in National Early Service Training at National Parks of Boston in Massachusetts. For three days, members connected in-person and received robust training to prepare them for their roles in assisting their site’s Volunteers-In-Parks (VIP) program and in building lasting connections to local communities.
Janet B. Hutchison: Park Founder and Long-time Volunteer

Janet Hutchison began advocating for the preservation of Cuyahoga Valley in 1966. As a member of the League of Women Voters, she gave slide shows and bus tours. After park establishment in 1974, Janet volunteered more than 22,600 hours providing expertise in cartography, graphic artistry, data management, and legislative histories.

This plaque commemorates the scene where President Abraham Lincoln was under enemy fire during the Battle of Fort Stevens on July 12, 1864. The plaque was dedicated by the Associated Survivors of the Sixth Army Corps on July 11, 1920. The plaque was placed on a boulder denoting the spot where a Federal surgeon was wounded near President Lincoln. The boulder was dedicated in 1911.

Their accomplishments in 2023 helped to secure a vital archaeology resource, protect trail users, and beautified significant historical resources at three high visitation sites.

Cedar Guest House

The Cedar Guest House was used to house invited guests of the LBJ Ranch. The prefabricated home was purchased in 1966 during the Johnson presidency and housed high administration officials as well as VIP guests. Most notably, this guest house was the site of an interview between Walter Cronkite and the former president before his death later that month in January 1973.
