Grand Canyon National Park
Bright Angel Trailhead

Bright Angel Trailhead is located just west of Bright Angel Lodge, Lookout Studio, and Kolb Studio. At 6,840 feet (2,085 m), it provides access for hikers and mules to many inner canyon destinations. From the Hermit Road Interchange shuttle bus stops, it is a short walk to the east, and up a hill, on a paved footpath to the trailhead. This winter, a number of trail closures (on parts of Bright Angel Trail) are in effect. Click on the link for details.

Ute Canyon Trail (Colorado National Monument)

Ute Canyon Trail can be accessed from above or below. The upper trailhead is on Rim Rock Drive and begins with a half-mile steep descent on switchbacks down to the canyon bottom. The lower access is from Wildwood Trailhead outside the Monument. Follow Liberty Cap or Corkscrew Trails up to the connection with Ute Canyon.

The lower trailhead for Serpents Trail in Colorado National Monument begins just inside the Grand Junction Entrance near Devils Kitchen Picnic Area. The upper trailhead begins 2.3 miles up Rim Rock Drive from the lower trailhead, just past the tunnel.

Echo Canyon Trail (Colorado National Monument)

Echo Canyon Trail shares the same trailhead as Old Gordon and Devils Kitchen Trails. This canyon lives up to its name, as just talking with your hiking partner often results in echoes off the canyon walls.

Built in 1941, the Old Barn was used to store hay, straw, tack, and the "night horse." Every morning, the night horse and assigned ranch hand would be up before sunrise to bring the other horses from the field. The opening on the right was enlarged sometime prior to 1955.

The commissary supplied basics like meat, potatoes, beans, and other canned goods for ranch workers and sheep camps. Sheepherders arriving on horseback, packed burros, and mules would stock up with weeks' worth of provisions and then return to their camps in the mountains.

Ranch Foreman's Cabin

Known as the "Little House," this cabin housed the ranch manager. Like the Bond Cabin, cooking was primarily done outdoors until the Dunigan family remodeled in the 1980s. In both cabins, the additions can be easily recognized because they used vertical board/batten framing instead of horizontal logs. This cabin had continual ranch management use from 1918 up until the early 2000s. It was featured in the show Longmire.

As the San Francisco Bay Area Network coho and steelhead monitoring crew wraps up the 2024-2025 spawner season, we are looking back at one of the busiest winters since the beginning of this monitoring program! We observed increased coho spawning in all three creeks we monitor—Olema, Pine Gulch, and Redwood Creeks. Olema took the cake with the strongest cohort of all.

To learn the story of Pelagia (also spelled Palakia) Melgenak is to learn the sanctity of shared traditions, the loving bonds of kinship and the reverence of a spiritual connection to the land around you. Born in the late 1870s in the remote village of Savonoski in Alaska, Pelagia grew up learning about hunting, gathering, navigating and guiding in the area. That all changed in 1912 with the hot ash falling like a blanket covering the region with the eruption of Novarupta.

The Sinking of the SMS Cormoran and the First US Shots of World War I

On December 13, 1914, the German auxiliary cruiser SMS Cormoran, out of fuel and cut off from Germany by World War I, took refuge from Japanese warships in Guam. The ship spent the next two years interned in Apra Harbor. When the United States declared war on Germany in 1917, the Cormoran's captain blew up the ship rather than let her fall into enemy hands.

Oregon Trail Ruts State Historic Site , also called the Guernsey Ruts, is located where the geography of the area forced the Oregon Trail to change course. At this point, the Trail was blocked from continuing along the North Platte River by a steep ridge of sandstone rock. It had to go up and over the ridge in order to continue heading west.

Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis and 2nd Earl Cornwallis, served as a British general during the American Revolution and notably surrendered his army to General Washington's Continental army and the allied French forces at Yorktown, Virginia in October 1781. This surrender effectively ended hostilities between British and American forces and led to peace negotiations, ending the war and recognizing American independence. Cornwallis later governed in India.
