Nicodemus National Historic Site

Nicodemus residents saw education as foundational to their community and organized School District No. 1 in 1879, the first in Graham County. After the previous 1887 schoolhouse burned down in 1916, the District No. 1 Schoolhouse was built in 1918 and used by the district until it closed in the early 1960s.

Blackwell was an outspoken critic of racial and economic inequality and the first Black female mayor elected in the state of Mississippi. We honor her as an ancestor for reminding us of the power to change the circumstances we were born into.

Above the village of Piti, sit three large Japanese Vickers-type Model 3 140mm coastal defense guns, the remains of hastily constructed fortifications build on the eve of the American invasion of Guam. As the Americans conquered more and more territory in the Pacific, the Japanese forced the CHamoru to build fortifications and install artillery and costal defense guns on Guam under brutal conditions.

Nettie Craig Asberry is considered the first Black woman to earn a doctorate degree. Her family settled in Nicodemus in 1879, and she taught in town from 1886-1889, teaching both at the District No. 1 School and offering private music lessons. Asberry spent most of her life in Tacoma, Washington where she continued to teach music and advocated for the equal rights of all.

Benjamin Lincoln, a major general of the Continental Army, was present at pivotal moments in the American Revolution. He oversaw the Continental Army's largest defeat when he surrendered 5,000 soldiers to the British in Charleston, South Carolina in May 1780. After being exchanged, he returned to the army and was present at the allied Franco-American victory at the Siege of Yorktown. He accepted the surrender of General Charles O'Hara's sword.

Charles Lee, former British Army officer, became the second highest ranking general of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. On June 28, 1776 he oversaw the victory at the Battle of Sullivan's Island in Charleston, SC. Private Sampson Yearney of Medford, Massachusetts was a free man of color who enlisted for service during the American Revolution. Sampson serviced multiple enlistments and died in service near Peekskill, New York on March 7, 1779.

Joseph James Barnes

Joseph J. Barnes was born in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 27, 1917. He enlisted in the Navy on September 23, 1942 as an Apprentice Seaman (AS). After studying to be a machinist at a Service School, Barnes graduated as a fireman 2nd class. In 1943, he reported to destroyer training before joining the crew of the USS Cassin Young. In serving on the Cassin Young, he joined the Pacific front of World War II. Barnes was killed in action from a kamikaze attack.

John James Takacs

John was one of six children (three boys and three girls) of Stephen and Elizabeth Takacs, who immigrated from Hungary. John grew up in a Bridgeport, Connecticut. In mid-December he arrived in California and on December 31, 1943, he joined the crew of USS Cassin Young (DD-973). Cassin Young was hit by a second kamikaze on July 30, 1945. Forty-five sailors were wounded and 22 were killed. WT2c(T) John Takacs was one of them.

As a member of the National League of Colored Women, Illinois Woman’s Alliance, Women’s Christian Temperance Union, and other women-led organizations, Fannie Barrier Williams laid the groundwork for women’s civic participation in the late 1800s. She used her talents of speaking and writing to pursue activism for the Black women’s rights movement of her time.
