Independence Rock was the most-noted landmark of the wagon trails west of Fort Laramie. The rock derived its name from a party of fur trappers who camped and celebrated Independence Day near the rock on July 4, 1830. Eventually, thousands of emigrants camped at the foot of this 1,900 feet long by 850 feet wide granite outcrop. They carved their names and messages into the granite, using Independence Rock as a bulletin board for Oregon Trail.

Rattlesnakes Emerging Earlier Due to Warmer Temperatures
- Type: Article

We conducted a 17-year study of Great Basin rattlesnakes (Crotalus lutosus) at four communal hibernacula in eastern Nevada and western Utah. Surveys were conducted during spring emergence (March, April, and May) from 2000 to 2017. Hibernacula were visited approximately 10 times each year. We defined peak emergence as the date on which the greatest number of snakes were observed at a hibernaculum (sensu Brown 2008).

Hair Conrad Cabin
- Type: Place
Hair Conrad was a Cherokee leader during the 1820s and 1830s. In 1838, he was selected to lead the first Cherokee detachment, which traveled the main (northern) route from Rattlesnake Springs (near Charleston, TN) to Indian Territory. This 20-foot by 22-foot two-story cabin was built about 1804, and except for the later addition of a kitchen, this log building still looks much as it did during the 30-plus years that Conrad lived here.
