Cowboy Cabin
Deer Creek Beach

Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains, Deer Creek Beach covers 1,241 acres and boasts over two miles of pristine coastline. This newly-acquired federal land offers scenic views, diverse uplands, riparian areas, and coastal bluffs. As part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, it’s perfect for wildlife and nature lovers. Note: There are no amenities on-site, so plan for a rugged experience.

The January 2025 Palisades Fire impacted nearly 20,000 acres within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. A Department of the Interior (DOI) Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team deployed to the area to conduct rapid assessments to first identify values at risk and then prescribe emergency stabilization measures to protect those values.
General Von Steuben Statue

This statue memorializes Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben as Inspector General of the Continental Army of the United States. The Prussian born general was skilled in the ways of military tactics and standards. While never explicitly stated, it is assumed that Baron von Steuben was gay. This memorial not only honors von Steuben’s military accomplishments, but also his closest intimate relationships.

Fort Scott is the only NPS site directly involved in the "Bleeding Kansas” era. The division between pro and anti-slavery forces is reflected by the fact that a former officers' quarters served as the Fort Scott, or "Free State" Hotel while directly across the parade ground an old infantry barracks had become the Western or "Pro Slavery" Hotel.

He was briefed on the project's progress and the positive impacts it will have on the preservation of the historic buildings and the ability to share President Johnson's story with the public.

The Massachusett Tribe has lived with and stewarded the Shawmut Peninsula for thousands of years. When European colonists arrived, they claimed and transformed the landscape. Settlers cut down the three hills of downtown Boston, filled in salt marshes and beaches, and built permanent structures along the shore. This place first became known as Bendall’s Cove, then the Town Dock, and later, Dock Square. Today, parts of historic Dock Square make up Sam Adams Park.

James Emery
- Type: Person
James Emery (born 1756) of Acton, Massachusetts, was part of a large, patriotic family. His father was a militia officer and his two older brothers, Sam and John, Jr., served in the war since April 1775. In April 1777, both brothers joined Colonel Nixon’s (6th) Massachusetts Regiment for 3-year terms. James wasn’t about to be left behind this time and joined the army too.
