Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area
Thompson Island

Just under 4.5 miles away from Long Wharf sits Thompson Island. It is both the closest island to Boston and one of the biggest islands in the harbor at 169.9 upland acres. Today, the island is home to the Outward-Bound Education Center. The island boasts salt marshes, a wetland, and remnants of fruit orchards.

One of the five peninsulas that are designated a part of the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park, the former island called World’s End boasts more than 250 acres, and four drumlins. World’s End is home to one of the highest points in the harbor and offers excellent views of Boston and the south shore.

The Graves

The Graves are located in the outer northeast corner of the Boston Harbor at approximately 11 miles away from Boston. Rocky outcroppings surround the island, which are 15 feet above sea level at high tide. The Graves are not open to the public as they are privately owned.

Outer Brewster Island

Sometimes referred to as an “outward island,” Outer Brewster sits ten miles from Downtown Boston. Its nearly twenty acres of rocky shoreline have been left relatively untouched due to its distance from the mainland. Similar to the other Brewster Islands, it is characterized by bed rock covered in soil and a barren landscape. Special features on the island include steep cliffs and a rock formation called “pulpit’s rock.”

Long Island Light

$11,500 dollars for the lighthouse, and the Boston Marine Society picked the location on the north end of the island. First lit in 1819, the light, then named “Inner Harbor Light,” stood at 20 feet tall.

Langlee Island

Eleven miles South of Boston, in the middle of Hingham Bay sits an eight-acre island called Langlee Island. Its closest in distance to Sarah, Ragged, and Button Islands. Similar to other islands in the harbor, local indigenous communities likely accessed the island seasonally before European settlers arrived.

Deer Island

One of five peninsulas within the boundaries of the park, Deer Island once stood apart as an island before a hurricane in 1938. It is now home to The Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.
