I am of the mountains but not always in them. Like obsidian from Cerro del Medio, I bear the fingerprint of the Jemez in all that I do. But, like the much of the obsidian, I, too, have travelled far from my point of origin.

Clear Lake Trailhead

This trailhead is located on the southeast side of the Uncle Tom's parking lot on the South Rim Drive of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. From this trailhead, you can access the following trails:- Ribbon Lake Trail Ribbon Lake Trail An easy 5.8-mile (9.3-km) there-and-back trail. The Great Dismal Swamp, a vast mire spanning 113,000 acres across northern North Carolina and southern Virginia, was not a pleasant place to call home, but for those enslaved in the region prior to the Civil War, the swamp promised both a better life and safety from those seeking to return them to slavery. Dismal Swamp maroons launched multiple highly organized attempts to dismantle slavery. One man, Tom Copper, became infamous for his vast operation within the Dismal Swamp.

Recently, a team of scientists chose southern sea otters to test if predator-prey population dynamics modeling could help conservation planners figure out where predator reintroductions could work. The team published their results in June. They found that two estuaries in Point Reyes National Seashore could probably feed lots of cute (or not) whimsical water weasels one day!

Frederick Billings

Frederick Billings made a career as a lawyer, real estate developer, and later, head of the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1861, he married Julia Parmly, and shortly after purchased the home and farm on the site of the birthplace of George Perkins Marsh in Woodstock, VT. Soon he had established a scientifically managed herd of Jersey cows and began a forest revitalization project on the adjacent Mount Tom. After his death, his estate was passed to his wife and daughters.

The Regional Awards for Cultural Resources recognize employees for their expertise and outstanding contributions caring for the nation’s cultural heritage. In 2022, Tom Leatherman helped establish and lead the new Japanese American Confinement Sites (JACS) Working Group, an internal NPS group whose mission is to provide leadership for sites associated with the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII.
